Description: The main point of this
assignment was to write a thesis-driven rhetorical and analytical essay that
uses close reading of a modern-day Holmes text. We were supposed to refer to
the classical conventions from Doyle and make conclusions about how
the modern-day text follows or revises the classical convention in order to fit
the 21st century audience. I wrote about the classic conventions of Dr. John
Watson invented by Doyle and popularized by his canon of the Holmes stories. I
used the two modern day T.V. shows called Elementary and Sherlock to
analyze the updated conventions of Watson.

Revision comments from peers Revision Comments from Prof. Haas
Revision Strategy: When I reread my essay after giving peer review to others, I realized that my own essay introduction sounded very choppy and vague. Therefore, I wanted to write a thesis that would offer an exceptionally insightful idea that addresses the prompt. According to my peers and the rubric, I needed a thesis that would be specific, sophisticated, and eloquent. After the one-on-one meeting with Prof. Haas, she made me realize that I need to explicitly state which Watson conventions I was working with. Also, she reminded me that most scholars we have read about in class use more than one page to introduce their articles. So, it would be okay for me to divide my introduction into more than one paragraph. Keeping all these suggestions in mind, I revised my thesis and introduction as follow, which corresponds to the final draft of the essay.
- Revised the thesis completely.
- Made clear which conventions of Watson have been updated and which ones have not.
- Divided the introduction paragraph into two paragraphs so that it is not too lengthy and tedious.
